Alice Mara: Swimmer Sugar Bowl
Alice Mara: Swimmer Sugar Bowl
£20.00
Having acquired herself a ticket to Olympic synchronized swimming event, an idea was sparked in the creative mind of ceramicist Alice Mara. Inspired by the way synchronized swimmers create patterns and regimentation with their bodies, she set about working up some new designs. She wanted the viewer to see at first glance an ornate pattern, then on closer inspection see the group of elegant synchronized swimmers.
As with all of her work, Alice asked a friend to pose for a 50’s inspired swimming photoshoot, having ordered a vintage swimming cap from ebay. She was pleased with the outcome because the imagery immediately took on the feel of swimmers from a bygone era, but with a contemporary twist.
About Alice Mara
Alice's interest in clay started at the early age of eight at a Saturday morning kid’s club. She went on to do her degree in workshop ceramics at Harrow College and later embarked on a Masters at the Royal College of Art.
The main inspiration for Alice's work is her local environment and the everyday, mundane experiences that occur within it. She walks around armed with her camera ready to catalogue these experiences so that she can incorporate them into her work.
She uses vivid imagery to create an almost utopian sense of place.
Alice's work has been shown at a prestigious exhibition held at Canary Wharfs' Canada Square foyer with nine other ceramic/glass artists. Alice also won the Queensbury Hunt award for most innovative use of ceramic material.
